  5. Then when done cooking put it into an ice bath to stop further cooking process before removing it from the heat.
  6. When testing temperature then leaves them in hot water to reheat, don’t overcook just till they are cooked more uniformly throughout but still firm enough not to fall apart during the reheating process!

How To Choose A Starfish For Cooking

  1. The wider the starfish the tastier it is! The thicker your starfish, the more difficult it may be to clean the inside portion of the shell after cooking.
  2. You should consider cooking a starfish that has many small prongs or spines as opposed to one that has only a few larger ones would be easier to clean and eat too.
  3. Freshwater and saltwater starfish are very different in flavor so please don’t interchange them in recipes unless you are certain they will pair well together. If you don’t know which kind of starfish is best for your recipe, try both types and see which tastes better in a particular recipe, because this will affect the cooking process and amount of time required in your recipe.
  4. There are many different types of starfish in the sea, colors, sizes, and shapes -so if you have to cook a starfish that is a specific color or has multiple colors, then it might be best to purchase a starfish that is most closely matching your specific recipe.
  5. Don’t eat the starfish all at once and try to break off the large pieces of the shell so that you do not choke on too much of it at once, they tend to be quite hard and chewy!

Starfish are not commonly eaten and are not a thriving species. They are not on the SEAFOOD WATCH list and are not harvested for food. You can find starfish on fishing docks and at bait shops, but it’s best not to collect them from the beach. Starfish takes longer to cook than other types of seafood, and there is a risk of ciguatera poisoning if you consume certain species. Starfish are high in cholesterol and saturated fat, but they also have low-calorie content and are rich in vitamins B and C and minerals. They are also commonly used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine as a curative or medicinal herb.
