How To Remove Rust From Bike Chain?

It doesn’t matter if you ride a mountain bike, road bike, hybrid bike, or cyclocross bike. The hazard of rust is universal and universal solutions are the most effective. When exposed to moisture, even the lightest of metals may develop microscopic rust specks. This process is accelerated and accelerated surfaces take on more surface area more rapidly than their less-accelerated brethren. Vulnerable metal surfaces are consequently left with deep gouges and pockmarks which allow water and humidity to leech into the pores of the metal where they reside. If you own a motorcycle, it’s probably best you leave the driving to someone who knows what they’re doing or stay home because who wants to put up with that?

How To Remove Rust From Bike Chain?

1. Protecting Rust-ridden Dry Places

Rust will be a hazard everywhere even in a bike chain or wheel—wheels, rims, spokes, brake pads, and air seals are all potential rust spots—and these must be carefully examined for the earliest identification of rust growth. Among these slow-forming processes, however, is certainly among the most important. We can prevent the gravel from being read at any time by correctly caring for our bicycle chains and wheels so that dirt stays dry.

2. Preventing Rust in the First Place

The most important step is to prevent rust from happening in the first place. The easiest way to do this is to avoid riding your bike when it’s wet and/or muddy, or when you’ve ridden through puddles of water. It’s also a good idea to keep your bike’s rims and spokes clean so that dirt doesn’t get trapped where it can cause rust.

3. Degreasing

Once you’ve got your chain clean, a good way to prevent rust is to apply a small amount of grease to the outside of the links and then let it sit there for at least 24 hours before you ride your bike again. If you’re going on an extended trip, make sure that you bring along some grease with you in case of emergencies.

4. Washing Your Bike Chain

After applying grease to your bike’s chain, it’s a good idea to wash it off before you ride again. However, if your bike did experience heavy rain or if there are other things that may have gotten trapped in between links (such as mud), then it’s best not to wash the chain until after several days have passed and all traces of mud/dirt have been cleaned away from its surface. On the other hand, if your chain has just had heavy rain or was washed by water from puddles, then it may be best for you not to wash it at all until after several days have passed and all traces of mud/dirt are gone from its surface.

5. Waxing

If you don’t want to risk rust, then it’s best not to ride your bike at all. However, if you want to be able to ride your bike as often as possible and you want the chain to remain in good condition even after many years of use, then it’s best that you wax your chain. If you decide to wax your chain, then do so before every ride (unless of course there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

6. Applying Wax

To apply wax to your bicycle chain, first clean off all dirt and grime from the chain with a damp rag before applying wax. Afterward, spread a small amount of lubricating oil onto the surface of the links by rubbing it between your fingers until it has coated each link completely. Then let it sit for at least 12 hours before riding again.

The easiest way is just to use a small paint brush and apply a coat on each link one by one (with each link being coated with enough oil so that there are no bare spots showing).

What Causes Bike Chain Rust?

1. Dirt and Grime

It’s best to clean the chain of your bike once a week if you want to keep it in good condition. However, if you don’t use a chain cleaning kit that is designed for your bike, then you’ll need to clean dirt and grime from the chain with a damp rag and/or toothbrush. If you don’t clean the chain often enough, then rust will eventually appear on your bike’s chain.

2. Mud and Puddles

If there are mud or other watery conditions in your area, it’s best not to ride your bike until such time as all traces of mud or water have been cleaned from its surface. However, if there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live and you want to be able to ride your bike again quickly, then it’s best that you wipe off as much dirt and grime from the surface of the chain link as possible before riding again (unless of course there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

3. Heavy Rainfall

If there has been heavy rainfall in an area where you live (or if there has been torrential rain), then it’s best not to ride your bike until after several days have passed (unless of course, such rain washes away all traces of mud/dirt from its surface). On the other hand, if such rainfall occurred during an extended period where no rain fell at all, then it’s best to ride your bike as soon as possible after such rainfall (unless of course there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

4. Snowfall

If there has been heavy snowfall in an area where you live (or if there has been torrential snowfall), then it’s best not to ride your bike until after several days have passed (unless of course such snowfalls were away all traces of mud/dirt from its surface). On the other hand, if such snowfalls occurred during an extended period where no snow fell at all, then it’s best to ride your bike as soon as possible after such snowfalls (unless of course there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

5. Heavy Rainfall and Snowfall

If both heavy rain and heavy snowfall occur at the same time in an area where you live, then it’s best not to ride your bike until after several days have passed (unless of course such rain and snow washes away all traces of mud/dirt from its surface). On the other hand, if such rain and/or snow falls occurred during an extended period where no rain or snow fell at all, then it’s best that you wipe off as much dirt and grime from the surface of your chain link as possible before riding again (unless of course there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

Why You Shouldn’t Use Detergents On Your Chain

1. Detergents are highly corrosive.

Detergents are highly corrosive, causing your chain to corrode more easily. Although most detergents contain an anti-corrosion agent, if your chain is not washed off properly, it will corrode even faster. In addition, detergent residue remains on the chain link even after washing it off. (In contrast, washing with soapy water alone does not leave any residue.)

2. Detergents may leave residues on your bike’s metal parts.

If you use detergent on your bike’s chain and then wipe it off with a rag or a dry cloth, then you may be doing more harm than good to these parts (especially if you use too much detergent). For this reason, it’s best not to wash off all traces of mud/dirt from the surface of the chain link by using detergent as part of a routine cleaning procedure (unless there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

3.  Detergents may leave residues on your bike’s metal parts.

If you use detergent as part of a routine cleaning procedure, then you may end up with residue left on your bike’s metal parts that can cause rusting and corrosion problems in the long run. If you use detergent on your bike’s chain and then wipe it off with a rag or a dry cloth, then you may be doing more harm than good to these parts (especially if you use too much detergent). For this reason, it’s best not to wash off all traces of mud/dirt from the surface of the chain link by using detergent as part of a routine cleaning procedure (unless of course there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

4. Detergents can damage the surface of your bike.

Detergents contain highly corrosive chemicals that can damage the surface of your bike if they come into contact with its metal parts. If you use detergent on your bike’s chain and then wipe it off with a rag or dry cloth, then you may be doing more harm than good to these parts (especially if you use too much detergent). For this reason, it’s best not to wash off all traces of mud/dirt from the surface of the chain link by using detergent as part of a routine cleaning procedure (unless there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

5. Detergents can cause damage to other surfaces in your house.

Many detergents contain highly corrosive chemicals that may damage other surfaces in your house (especially if they come into contact with these surfaces). For this reason, it’s best not to wash off all traces of mud/dirt from the surface of the chain link by using detergent as part of a routine cleaning procedure (unless there are puddles or other watery conditions in the area where you live).

Conclusion

Bike chains are an essential part of motorcycling. When they rust, you’re normally in trouble. These 5 tips will help you get rid of rust from a bike chain the easy way.
